Sashaying around the stage in black leather, strangely shaped quaff, heeled shoes and snake skin scarf, the one time MTV UK VJ won at least as many enemies as fans that night. Audience members who weren't rolling in the aisles with laughter, were wearing blank stares of bewilderment as Russell took jibes at Madonna, A-Rod, The Jonas Brothers’ purity rings and ‘retarded cowboy’ George Bush .
While the success of his comedic riflings was hotly debated, one thing was for sure, no one could stop talking about Russell Brand!
Now, for the second year in a row, audiences will be treated to the unpredictable, witty and laugh-out-loud offensive comedic stylings of the UK native when he returns to host the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City on September 13 (airing on MTV New Zealand September 14 @ 7:30pm).
Brand (kind of) promised to keep those famous virgin jabs to a minimum at this year’s awards: "This year will be a controversy-free festival of love and discrete orgasms," said the ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ star.
"We are thrilled that despite numerous death threats from Jonas Brothers fans, Russell Brand has accepted our offer to put his life on the line and host the VMAs again this year," said Stephen Friedman, General Manager of MTV.
The 2009 MTV VMAs promise to have more thrills and spills than you could shake a silver moon-man at, so stay locked for more info.
The 2009 MTV VMA's premieres on MTV New Zealand Monday September 14 @ 7:30pm.
